Are Scholarships and Fellowships Taxable?

by kmhagen July 20, 2005

Graduate Level

Tuition reductions for a graduate student who is performing teaching or research activities for the educational institution are generally not taxable.  Other tuition reductions for graduate students, who are not teaching or doing research, would normally be taxable.

Any tuition reduction benefits that do not qualify as tax-free benefits should be included in your W-2 and reported on the “Wages, salaries, tips, etc.” line of your tax return.
