by Mary M. Alward August 25, 2005

Cranberry Museum

Visit the cranberry museum in Furfurd to learn intriguing facts about the delicious and nutritious fruit. Learn how the fruit grows, how it is propagated and how the cranberry farmers harvest the fruit.

Elk Grazing

Magnificent elk can often be seen grazing a quarter mile west of the Elk River bridge and across the road from the Ocean Spray cranberry processing plant. If you have never seen elk free-grazing, you’re in for an awesome experience.

John’s River Wildlife Area

Leave Westport and just after you cross the John’s River bridge, take the first right and follow the road to the river and then to the John’s River Wildlife Area. This is a great place to fish for trout, launch a boat or, in the lowlands, watch free-grazing elk. This is a great outdoor experience.

Go-Karts

The kids will love a bit of fun on the go-karts and there are two tracks in Westport. One is at the Westport Family Fun Center and the other is located at the Breakers Motel.

Fly a Kite

The Grayland/Westport area is a great place for kite flying because of the consistent northwesterly winds. Kids will love watching their kits ride high in the sky. If you don’t have a kite of your own to bring along, you can pick one up at almost any shop in the area and there’s hundreds of places that are safe for kiting.

Grays Harbor Lighthouse

The Grays Harbor Lighthouse is rich in history and legends. It’s more than a century old and is the tallest lighthouse on the coast of Washington. The lighthouse takes part in the US Lighthouse Society’s Passport Program, so remember to get your passport stamped while visiting.

Rock Hound Alert

At the north end of the beach in Westport, approximately one mile south of the South Jetty, the beach is covered with rocks. Visit at low tide, stroll along and look for agates. All rock hounds will love searching for these beautiful stones and there are a nice variety of other rocks as well.
