History Of Microsoft Windows In 1983 Microsoft announced its development of Windows, a graphical user interface (GUI) for its own operating system (MS-DOS) that had shipped for IBM PC and compatible computers since 1981. Microsoft modeled the GUI, which was first known as Interface Manager, after that of Apple's Mac OS. Bill Gates had been shown a Macintosh prototype by Steve Jobs early in its development, around 1981, and Microsoft was partnered by Apple to create some of the important early Mac software, such as Word and Excel.
Microsoft Windows Microsoft Windows is a range of closed source proprietary commercial operating environments for personal computers and servers. The range was first introduced by Microsoft in 1985 and eventually has come to dominate the world personal computer market. All recent versions of Windows are fully-fledged operating systems.
Windows Media Audio Windows Media Audio (WMA) is a proprietary compressed audio file format developed by Microsoft. It was initially a competitor to the MP3 format, but with the introduction of Apple's iTunes Music Store, it has positioned itself as a competitor to the Advanced Audio Coding format used by Apple. It is part of the Windows Media framework. An initial reason for the development of WMA might have been that MP3 technology is patented and has to be licensed from Thomson SA for inclusion in the Microsoft Windows operating system.
Windows Media Player Windows Media Player is a free software media player used for playing audio and video on personal computers running Microsoft Windows. Microsoft has also made available versions for other operating systems including Pocket PC, Mac OS, and Solaris. These tend to lag behind the Windows versions in features, software update frequency, and the number of file formats supported. The basic file formats are WMV (Windows Media Video & Audio), WMA (Windows Media Audio), and ASF (Audio Structured File).
Windows Media Video Windows Media Video (WMV) is a generic name for the set of proprietary streaming video technologies developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Windows Media framework.
WMV is not built solely on Microsoft in-house technology. From version 7 (WMV1), Microsoft has used its own non-standard version of MPEG-4. The video stream is often combined with an audio stream of Windows Media Audio.
Windows Media Windows Media is a framework for media creation and distribution for Microsoft Windows. It consists of a software development kit with several application programming interfaces and a number of prebuilt technologies. The following are part of Windows Media:
*Windows Media Player *Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) *Windows Media Audio (WMA) *Windows Media Video (WMV)
Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition (which is often known as Windows Mobile 2003SE) is the latest version of the Windows Mobile operating system from Microsoft. It includes the option to switch between landscape to portrait screen positions. The latest version of Pocket Internet Explorer (PIE) includes a new way to layout web pages. One may now view pages using a single-column layout, eliminating the need to scroll horizontally. Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition also supports VGA resolutions. Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition was not originally going to contain this feature; due to pressure from Pocket PC manufacturers, Microsoft decided to add this feature to Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. The Dell Axim x30 was the first Pocket PC to feature Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Another resolution Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition supports is QVGA for Smartphones. The Smartphone version of this operating system does not include support for landscape and portrait, only portrait. The operating system now supports a new form factor (square): 240 by 240 and 480 by 480 (for VGA screens). This new form factor is suited for vendors who want to incorporate a hardware keyboard to the device. The current aspect ratio of 320 by 240 makes it too clumsy to add a hardware keyboard. Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition also includes support for Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA).
Microsoft Media Services Microsoft’s streaming server uses the Microsoft Media Services (MMS) protocol to transfer unicast data. MMS can be transported via UDP or TCP. If the client Windows Media Player cannot negotiate a good connection using MMS over UDP, it will resort to MMS over TCP. If that fails, the connection can be made using HTTP over TCP, which is not as ideal for streaming as MMS over UDP, but ensures connectivity nonetheless.
Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware, also known more simply as Microsoft AntiSpyware or Windows AntiSpyware, is a software program that primarily removes, quarantines or prevents a spyware presence on a Microsoft Windows operating system. It was released in beta form by Microsoft in January 2005.
Windows Media DRM Windows Media Digital Rights Management (WMDRM) is a platform for the secure delivery of audio and/or video content over a IP network, to a PC or device.
