Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How long does it take to approve my application?
We receive many applications a day, and try to review each application as quickly as possible. Ideally, you should hear back from us within three days.

  2. How long does it take to approve my article?
Our editors are working diligently to review the many articles we receive each day. It may take up to a week before your article is approved. You can help us by making sure there are absolutely no punctuation, spelling, formatting, or grammatical errors in your work.

  3. How can I make sure my article is reviewed quickly?
The easier your article is to edit, the faster we can review it (a factor that will be reflected in your offer, as well). Look at your previous submission. Compare the version of the article you submitted with the version we approve and post. Take note of the edits we've made to your piece. Often, it's not that you've made a mistake, but that you haven't conformed to our style guides. Consistency is important, and the more you can help us preserve it, the easier it will be to edit your piece. The most frequent change we have to make is altering headings. Ideally, you should mark your headings with h3 and h2 tags, using the pulldown menu within the editor if necessary. Other changes we are frequently forced to make include altering single quotes to double quotes, adjusting Canadian and British spellings to meet our American style, and removing improper capitalizations.

  4. I don't have a PayPal account. PayPal is not available where I live. I don't understand PayPal. What can I do?
Sorry, but we can only make payment through PayPal.

  5. Can I use hyperlinks?
We try to ensure that the articles we publish are as timeless as possible. For this reason, we discourage the use of hyperlinks within the body of articles, especially to a page that is likely to change or disappear.

  6. What if I don't like the price you offer?
You are free to reject our offered price. Simply let us know and we will delete your work from our database.

  7. How do you determine pay rates?
The rate we offer you is based on the quality of your writing, the ease of editing, and the length of your piece. Other factors depend on the type of article. Feature Articles:Topics that have broad appeal are more valuable to us than very specific topics, and this will be reflected in the offer. Pay varies widely. For a great article, you can expect tens of dollars. Capsules: When you choose to write a capsule, you'll see a list of keywords upon which you can base your topic, and a few ratings of the quality of that keyword. Much of the offer for a capsule will be based on the use of valuable keywords, and the effectiveness of their use within the body of text.

  8. Why did you change my title? Edit my article? Destroy my work?
We reserve the right to edit articles for the sake of improved clarity, punctuation, grammar, and spelling. If you are unhappy with any changes, you are free to reject our offer to purchase your work.

  9. Why haven't I heard back from you?
If you haven't heard back from us, be patient. It's possible that we just haven't gotten around to reading your work yet. Also, make sure that you've added to the safe list at your email account. Certain spam blockers (notably AOL's) bounce the messages that sends out. We're working on solving this problem.

  10. How do I know if someone else has already written an article on my topic?
You will be able to search the database of articles we have online, though some overlap is okay. Obviously, we're looking for fresh topics, so creative and original is better. It's also important to note that topics of broad appeal are what we like best, so keep that in mind when selecting a topic.

  11. Where will my articles be published?
Your articles will appear on We do not currently have plans to sell your articles to anyone else. However, we reserve the right to do so in the future, and we may publish the article at other domains as well.

  12. Can my article be in first person? Can I use contractions? Quotes?
You're free to choose the best format for your work. Use whatever you think is the best way to present your ideas. Our targeted audience is broad, and you should write for the typical web reader. Casual but informative should be your goal.

  13. I found a job posting that described a process different that what appears on your site. What's that all about?
There are several job postings still appearing online that are now out of date. If you see one, let us know so we can amend it.

  14. Can you hire people from outside the U.S.?
If you are able to accept payment via PayPal, and your command of written English is excellent, you are welcome to apply.

  15. Why can't I paste my article?
Some browsers will not allow you to paste your article using right click. Try clicking your cursor in the "Article Body" field and pressing Ctrl+V.

  16. My article has appeared somewhere else. Is that okay?
We cannot accept articles that have appeared elsewhere, with the exception of your own personal site. Please note: You may not send us work that is copyrighted elsewhere, either in part or in whole.

  17. What rights do you buy?
For both capsules and feature articles, we buy All Rights.

  18. Do you provide a 1099 at the end of the year?
The IRS only requires that we provide a 1099 if you are paid more than $600. The registration page includes the optional field to enter your SSN.

  19. Does my article have to be in English?

  20. Why was I rejected?
If your application was rejected, it is because the quality of your writing is not at the excellent level we require. If we think you are a talented writer, but cannot use your proposal, we will ask for another, but you will not be rejected based on your proposal.

  21. Do I have to propose a topic every time?
No. Once you have been accepted as an author, you are free to choose your topic. Keep in mind, however, that we prefer unique topics of broad appeal.

  22. How do I change my password?
Go to your user profile page, which is linked to at the top of every page when you are logged in. Then click on "Update Profile Information." Finally click on "Change Password" at the bottom of the profile update page.

  23. I forgot my username/password. What can I do?
Go to the password reminder page and enter the email address you specified in the signup process. Your username and a new password will be emailed to you.

  24. Do I need to wait until an article is approved before submitting another?
No. You may submit more than one article at a time.

  25. When can I expect payment?
After your article has been reviewed, we will make you an offer. Once you've accepted the offer, you can expect payment within a few days. The payment schedule allows for payments twice a week, so depending on where in the schedule you happened to respond, it may be up to a few days before your payment is sent.

  26. How long should my article be?
That depends. Your article should be as long as necessary to make your point clear. However, for feature articles, there is a minimum of 1000 words. Anything less than 1000 words likely fails to address the topic with the in-depth focus required of a feature, and should be submitted as a capsule. While there is no specific minimum for a capsule, it will probably be difficult to clearly illustrate anything in fewer than 300 words. (A skilled writer will be more concerned about delivering a quality piece than meeting the minimum requirements.) Capsules should be quick and easy to both read and write, so they should rarely be longer than 1000 words.
